Tour #1 Wednesday,

2008, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
HISTORIC CITY TOUR
The tour begins with an orientation of downtown
Salt Lake City. We’ll drive through the newest and nicest open-air
shopping mall (The Gateway), and point out the Olympic fountain and
the old Union Pacific depot. We’ll pass the Energy Solutions Arena,
the home of the NBA Utah Jazz., including a drive-by of the Temple
Square block, and a description of each of the buildings on the
block. See the Tabernacle, the Mormon Temple, the Beehive House, and
the Lion House – city-founder Brigham Young’s beautifully restored
homes. While living here, Young was Territorial Governor and
President of the Mormon Church. Then we’ll drive up Capitol Hill and
tour the recently renovated Capitol building, the city’s crowning
jewel overlooking the Salt Lake Valley. The view from the front
steps is magnificent. Murals lining the Georgian marble rotunda
walls tell the story of the settling of the Old West.
The tour includes a drive past the elegant
mansions on South Temple Street. Many of these homes were built with
wealth derived from the Park City mining boom of the late 1800’s.
One of these homes is the current Governor’s Mansion, which is the
said to be the largest in the United States.
We’ll also drive by Trolley Square, a unique
shopping center built in trolley barns from the early 1900’s. We’ll
continue up to the University of Utah’s Rice/Eccles Stadium, site of
the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2002 Winter Olympic
Games, and Old Fort Douglas, site of the 2002 Olympic Athlete’s
Village. Visit Pioneer Trail State Park and This-Is-The-Place
Monument at the mouth of Emigration Canyon. This monument stands as
a tribute to the men, women and children who were instrumental in
settling this area. The Park is a small-scale Jamestown, with
docents demonstrating the lifestyle of turn-of-the-20 th-century
Utahans. (3 Hours) $32.00, 30 person minimum

unique shopping experience.
Browse 200,000 great
outdoor items, gear for all your favorite outdoor activities. Next,
the Kennecott Copper Mine is the largest open pit copper mine in the
world. This mine is so enormous that shuttle astronauts can identify
it from space! Since mining operations began in 1906, five billion
tons of ore have been extracted. It’s a 24/7 operation, and the
copper that comes out of it is 99.999% pure. A film in the Visitor’s
Center explains the process and details the thousands of uses for
this mysterious metal. We will have the opportunity to stand at the
rim of the mine, browse the displays in the visitor’s center and
shop for copper trinkets and other unique items at the gift shop.
We’ll board the bus again, then head for one more stop

Shaking the Tree
Want to know more about your ancestors? Where did
they come from and when? Get on board one of the most exciting
hobbies sweeping the nation.
We will visit the Family Search facility in
Temple Square, which has access to the world’s largest collection of
genealogical information. Family Search is right across a plaza from
the Mormon Temple on Temple Square and it is a great place for an
introduction to genealogy. Each person in the tour (up to 30) will
have access to a computer and will enter simple information as far
back as they can. For instance, they may know that their
grandparents lived in Connecticut in the late 1800s. Trained docents
will tell them how to begin a search, and if they get stuck, the
docents will give them a little more specific help. These resources
are available on the Internet, so once you get comfortable with the
process, you can do it from home!
After about 1.5 hours of the Family Search
activity, guests will take time to visit Temple Square, and our
guide will give you information about the experience. You’ll even
have time for lunch on you own at one of the nearby restaurants. If
you've been wondering about your family history, come on in and
investigate. Who knows? You might be related to royalty! (4 Hours)
